L’alimentation des tortues se compose à 90% d’herbes sauvages et 10% de fruits, elles sont principalement herbivores (phytophages) et occasionnellement frugivore. Dans leur biotope, les espèces du genre Testudo (spp), qui vivent dans le Bassin Méditerranéen, se nourrissent de 40 à 50 espèces végétales différentes, sous forme variable selon la saison.

En captivité, une telle diversité est impossible, il est donc indispensable de leur procurer de la nourriture proche de leur régime naturel : variée, riche en sels minéraux, en oligo-éléments, en vitamine A et en eau.

Par ailleurs, la nourriture doit apporter 1,5 à 4 fois plus de calcium que de phosphore, sans négliger la vitamine A
